The Business Behind the Coffee

The Business Behind the Coffee

When people ask what Ritual Roasters does, the obvious answer is that we roast coffee.

But that’s never really been the whole story.

Coffee has always been the thing that brings people together. Behind every cup is a chain of people making it possible: producers, exporters, importers, our team, café owners, baristas and, ultimately, the people enjoying it. That’s what has always fascinated me.

When Callum and I started Ritual seven years ago, we weren’t trying to build a B Corp. We were trying to build a business that people genuinely enjoyed being part of, and coffee that people could be proud to serve.

Like most small business owners, the early years were spent juggling everything. Learning to roast, delivering coffee, trying to win new customers, making payroll, fixing whatever had gone wrong that week and hoping there was enough left over to invest back into the business.

But even then, one thing felt important.

We wanted to build a company that looked after people. One that cared about quality, did the right thing where it could, and took a long-term view rather than chasing short-term wins.

As we’ve grown, that ambition hasn’t changed.

In fact, it’s become clearer.

Recently we launched a new identity for Ritual built around a simple belief: coffee is about more than what’s in the cup.

That wasn’t just a marketing message.

It’s the way we’ve always wanted to run our business.

Coffee is about relationships. It’s about helping cafés thrive. It’s about celebrating the people producing incredible coffee around the world. It’s about creating a workplace where our team can do meaningful work. It’s about recognising that businesses have a responsibility beyond simply making a profit.

As founders, it’s easy to measure success by growth. More customers. More revenue. More people. Those things matter—they’re what keep a business alive.

But they’re really not the only things worth measuring.

I’m most proud of the relationships we’ve built, the cafés that have grown alongside us, the producers we’ve continued to buy from year after year, and the culture we’re creating within our own team.

We said coffee is about more than what’s in the cup.

Becoming a Certified B Corporation is our way of making sure the business behind that message lives up to it.

For us, B Corp isn’t a finish line or a badge to stick on our packaging. It’s a framework that challenges us to keep improving. It asks difficult questions about how we treat people, how we govern the business, how we think about our environmental impact, and how we contribute to the communities we’re part of.

One of the things I love most about coffee is that it’s full of people who care deeply. Producers constantly refining their craft. Baristas obsessing over the smallest details. Café owners building spaces that become part of their communities.

I think businesses should approach improvement in exactly the same way.

That’s what B Corp represents to us.

Not perfection, but a commitment to keep asking better questions, making better decisions and building a better business.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of our journey so far—our producers, café partners, customers, suppliers and our brilliant team. You’ve helped shape Ritual into what it is today.

We’re still the same company.

Just with an even stronger commitment to doing things the right way.
